Demonstrated early leadership as General Secretary of the Gauhati University unit of the All Assam Students' Union while pursuing his MSc degree.

Joined BJP
Joined the BJP under former State President Late Prabin Baruah. Motivated by Late Pramod Mahajan, he voluntarily resigned from the prestigious IIS in 2005 to enter active politics full-time.

Defeated CPI(M) candidate Shri Manoranjan Talukdar by a huge margin from Sorbhog constituency. Became Deputy Leader of the BJP Legislative Party.

Re-elected from Sorbhog. Served as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly from June–December 2016. Then assumed office as BJP Assam State President — enrolling around 42 lakh members over two consecutive terms.

Won from Patacharkuchi with 72% vote share — the second-highest in Assam. Defeated the Communist candidate in the Communist-dominated Bhawanipur-Sorbhog constituency by a margin of over 40,000 votes. Selected by the NDA as its candidate for the 22nd Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly — set to become the first person ever to occupy the Speaker's Chair for a second term.
